Kazantsev Pledges Continued Protection of Armenia’s Borders

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Russian president Putin’s representative in the Russian southern region of Okrug Victor Kazantsev–arrived today in Armenia on a three-day visit. Talking to reporters–the official said he will be discussing with Armenian officials an array of proposals aimed at boosting economic–social and cultural relations between Armenia and Russia’s south–home to the biggest Armenian community across the globe.

Last year–trade between Armenia and Russia’s southern district amounted to a meager $12.9 million. Because neither Armenia’s nor Russia’s are satisfied with this figure–revealed Kazantsev–he has brought to Armenia’several leading businessmen from the region–eager to seek partners in Armenia.

Kazantsev–A former career military officer stationed in Gyumri for a decade while with the Russian military–will travel to Gyumri on Wednesday to receive an Honorary Citizenship of Gyumri.

"We defended Armenia’s borders when it was part of the Soviet Union–and now a new generation of border guards defends the borders of Russia’s most loyal ally in the region," he said. Kazantsev is due to meet with president Kocharian–prime minister Markarian and Catholicos Karekin II.

Autonomous Okrug–is one of the 89 regions of the Russian Federation. It is located about as far east and north as one can go from Moscow and still be in Russia.
