Russia’s South and Armenia Geared to Boost Relations

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Meeting with Armenia’s President Kocharian for the second time this week–Russian president Putin’s representative in the Russian southern region of Okrug Victor Kazantsev–reaffirmed on Thursday–his pledge to seek ways to boost trade relations between Armenia and Russia’s south home to–based on various estimates–anywhere from 500,000 to 1 million ethnic Armenia’s.

Kocharian’s press office stated the two discussed the same issues reviewed earlier–including social and cultural relations between the two regions. Kazantsev stressed all former contacts between Armenia and Russia’s south should be restored as soon as possible.

Trade last year between Armenia and Russia’s south amounted to a mere $12.9 million–but Kazantsev said this figure could be increased tens times–noting that the areas of agriculture and transport hold great prospects for development.

Kazantsev thanked Armenian authorities for their kind treatment of Russian military personnel based in Armenian Gyumri; together with Armenian border guards–Russian frontier guards supervise Armenia’s borders with Turkey and Iran.
