Siamese Twins Separated in Armenia

YEREVAN (dpa)–Siamese twins were separated Tuesday in an emergency operation in Yerevan to save the life of one baby two days after the twins were born–medical officials said.

It marked the first time that conjoined twins have been separated by surgery in the Caucasian republic.

The chief surgeon at a hospital in Yerevan–Nikolay Dallakian–said the operation became necessary at birth when the umbilical cord was separated. The twins had been joined at the liver–intestines and membrane enclosing the heart.
