Cumhuriyet Reports on Turkish Diplomats’ Efforts in US

ISTANBUL–Turkey’s Cumhuriyet daily newspaper–referring to Turkish diplomats’ efforts in the United States–reported yesterday (June 27) that Turkey is–on the one hand–attempting to establish dialogue with the Armenian Diaspora and–on the other–continuing diplomatic efforts to block the passage of an Armenian Genocide resolution in the US Congress.

The daily writes that an official of Turkey’s Foreign Ministry–Ambassador Ugur Ziyal–a senior diplomat–met with high-ranking US officials to discuss improvemen’s in relations between their two countries and warned that passage of the resolution would damage those bilateral relations.

The report also notes that through its diplomats Turkey has representatives of the Armenian Diaspora in New York and Los Angeles–"Do not block Turkey-Armenia relations–which are on the right track toward normalization."

At the same time–the paper goes on–Turkey is undertaking efforts to find a solution to the Armenian Genocide problem. Another senior official of the Foreign Ministry–Ambassador Ecvet Tezcan–who held meetings with some Armenian groups in the United States this month–is preparing to take continue similar efforts to Europe.

It was after Tezcan’s meetings that Ziyal went to Washington to meet with members of the House and Senate committees on foreign affairs and foreign relations in an effort to ensure the failure of the Genocide resolution.
