Stability in Azerbaijan Good for Armenia Says Oskanian

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenia is ready for all scenarios in the event of a leadership change in Azerbaijan–but prefers stability in the neighboring republic–revealed Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian in an interview with ArmTV; he disagreed with the frequently expressed view that what is bad for Azerbaijan is good for Armenia.

He said that Azerbaijan’s stability is preferable–particularly because "in case of instability–the Karabagh problem will not be resolved in due course." It is desirable for a government that is up-to-date on the Karabagh issue–"and will demonstrate readiness to continue from where the process came to a halt because of Aliyev’s health problems or for other reasons," said Oskanian.

According to Oskanian–Aliyev’s son Ilham Aliyev will likely come to power–and considering the options–his leadership is perhaps the most favorable for Armenia–as I. Aliyev is familiar with negotiations conducted by his father–"is familiar with the Key West document–regardless how strongly he denies having seen it–and knows the attitude of the international community on the Karabagh issue."

Oskanian said that–if on the other hand–someone unfamiliar came to power–"It would essentially complicate the situation. . . "
