Agreement on Cooperation in Agriculture Signed Between Armenia and Syria

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenian Minister for Agriculture David Lokian and his Syrian counterpart Nur-ad-Din Munah–signed an agreement on Wednesday creating the framework for agricultural cooperation between the two countries during 2003-2005. The program strives to develop bilateral agricultural trade–foster information exchange and increase cooperation in plant cultivation–cattle breeding–forestry and the reprocessing industry.

Commenting on the importance of this agreement–Lokian said the cooperation between the countries will enter a new phase to cover more ground.

During the meeting–the sides discussed issues concerning the mutual support of the agricultural reform process in each country. Both sides agreed that the development of cooperation in agriculture–trade and other areas may greatly strengthen the friendship between the two nations.

Munah expressed Syria’s readiness to share its experience with Armenian experts and said that mutual visits–experience exchange and retraining will be very welcome.

The agricultural ministers also said that the present volume of trade between the two countries is very small–but assured that after the implementation of the new cooperative program–the trade volume will increase significantly.

During their visit to Armenia–the Syrian delegation will have a meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Antranig Margarian and will also visit agricultural scientific centers in the country. The delegation will be in Armenia till August 29.
