Council of Europe Welcomes Armenia’s Abolition of Death Penalty

STRASBOURG (CE)–Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly President Peter Schieder and the Secretary General of the Organization Walter Schwimmer–welcomed on Wednesday the decision by the National Assembly of Armenia to abolish the death penalty and to ratify Protocol No. 6 to the European Convention on Human Rights.

"This important step brings Europe closer to total abolition of the death penalty–which is one of our Organization’s priorities. We strongly encourage the Armenian authorities to continue fulfilling the commitmen’s made by the country when it joined the Council of Europe"–they stressed.

The Armenian Parliament voted 92 to 1 yesterday in favor of the abolition of the death penalty and to ratify Protocol No. 6 to the Human Rights Convention abolishing capital punishment. To date–41 countries of the 45 Council of Europe member states have ratified or signed this protocol.
