Modest Number of Armenia’s in Georgian Parliamentary Elections

AKHALKALAK (A-Info)–With the list of parties and blocks competing in Georgia’s November 2 parliamentary elections finalized by the country’s Central Election Commission–only a modest number of ethnic Armenia’s are represented in the 21 participating political parties and blocs.

The pro-government bloc For A New Georgia places Arnold Stepanian 54 on its list–and Givi Shugarov and Alexander Movsisian–59 and 108 respectively.

Armen Gevorgian and Sasha Alexanian are placed 40 and the 55 respectively on the list of the People’s Renaissance Union of Aslan Abashidze–the leader of Abkhazia.

The opposition Burjanadze-Democrats bloc list includes Melik Rayisian at 24 and Henrikh Muradian at 29. Though other Armenia’s are included on other bloc and party lists– there is little chance that they will be elected to Georgia’s parliament.

Under the majoritarian system–two candidates (MP Henzel Mkoyan of the pro-government bloc and Kolya Grigorian of the opposition Burjanadze-Democrats) were nominated in the predominantly Armenian populated region of Ninotsminda region.

In the Akhalkalak regions–the pro-government bloc nominated Burjanadze-Democrats Hamlet Shahbekian and MP Hamlet Movsisian. The Industry Will Save Georgia party–nominated Meruzhan Yezoyan. Other candidates nominated in this region are Anastas Kosian–Artur Yeremian and Sergey Poghosian.

In the Tsalka district–the For New Georgia party nominated Yuri Khechoyan–while initiative groups nominated Haik Meltonian–Van Baiburdian–Armen Gharagiozian–and Azasi Gevorgian. In the Akhaltskha region that has a fifty percent Armenian population–the People’s Renaissance Union has nominated Sergey Karoyan.
