Congressman Schiff to Receive “ANC Freedom Award”

LOS ANGELES–Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA) will be the recipient of the "ANC Freedom Award" to be awarded at the Armenian National Committee of America – Western Region’s (ANCA-WR) Annual Banquet. The ANCA-WR Banquet is the most prestigious Armenian-American grassroots public affairs event held in the Western United States. Past "ANC Freedom Award" recipients have included the Genocide Project and the Grammy Award nominated rock musicians System of a Down.

Congressman Schiff was first elected to the US House of Representatives in 2000–and has been a strong advocate on issues important to the many Armenian-American voters in the 29th Congressional District – which includes Glendale–Pasadena–Burbank and La Canada. He is the author of House Resolution 193–which reaffirms support for the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and which specifically references the Armenian Genocide. Congressman Schiff presently serves on the House Judiciary Committee as well as the House International Relations Committee. The Judiciary Committee unanimously voted for H. Res. 193. The Congressman’s bill is presently waiting to be considered on the floor of the US House of Representatives.

Most recently–Congressman Schiff and Congressman George Radanovich (R-CA) introduced legislation that would allow states to assist Armenian Genocide survivors and their descendants to pursue personal insurance claims. Specifically–the "Armenian Victims Insurance Fairness Act" would allow states to require that insurance companies open their Armenian Genocide era archives (1875-1923) and provide lists of policy holders from that time period.

The Annual Banquet will be held on November 9 at the Universal City Sheraton. To purchase a table or tickets for the ANCA-WR Banquet or for any other banquet related questions–please contact Kris Demirdjian at the ANCA-WR offices – (818) 500-1918.
