YEREVAN (YERKIR)–During the first round of voting in the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on Tuesday–Armenia was elected to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)–to fill one of two vacancies available. Also competing for the position were Belarus–Moldova–and Poland. Poland and Belarus will compete during a second round of voting for the available seat. Composed of 54 members who serve for three-year terms–ECOSOS issues policy recommendations to the UN system and Member States on promoting higher standards of living–full employment–and economic and social progress; identifying solutions to international economic–social and health problems; facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation; and encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Armenia is also a member of the UN Commission on Human Rights–and serves on the UN Economic and Social Council.
