Kocharian Seeks Closer Economic Ties with Romania

BUCHAREST (RFE/RL)–Armenian President Robert Kocharian met on Monday with his Romanian counterpart Ion Iliescu–in Romania’s capital Bucharest–to begin his official visit. After their talks–the two presidents issued a joint statement outlining their intent to strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

Kocharian and Iliescu also signed an agreement on visas for diplomatic passport holders–and industrial property protection. President Kocharian will meet with members of Romania’s Armenian community during his visit. Romania is home to over 3,000 Armenia’s.

President Kocharian is seeking Romania’s support in helping Armenia integrate into Europe; Romania is an EU candidate and could become a full member as early as 2007.
