Oskanian Details Key West Agreement Provisions in Closed Session

YEREVAN (YERKIR)–Members of the Armenian National Assembly’s Foreign Relations Committee–along with Mountainous Karabagh Republic’s (MKR) Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Vahram Atanesian–heard Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian detail Armenia’s position on the (MKR) conflict resolution process–as well as Armenia’s official position on Armenian-Turkish relations–during a closed session of the committee.

Following the meeting–Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Armen Rustamian told journalists that since the Meghri issue continues to be exploited–"explicit explanations were provided," to clarify the matter.

Rustamian said that the concluding document at the end of 2001 Key West Talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan presented four communication options. One of those options was to open a transport corridor connecting Azerbaijan with Nakhichevan through the territory of Armenia’s Meghri region.**

He conveyed parliament’s readiness to hear the position of various political groups in MKR–in order to "crystallize" the position of the "Armenian political elite," and called for detailed proposals.

** In June 2002 Heydar Aliyev claimed that Armenia was ready to surrender the strategic Meghri district to Azerbaijan as part of a Karabagh peace accord. Earlier this year–Oskanian harshly criticized attempts to again exploit the Meghri issue and said that these attempts are tantamount to questioning Armenia’s integrity. "It is utterly inadmissible to speculate whether the Armenian authorities are planning to cede Meghri," Oskanian reiterated in February 2003.
