Quebec NA Unanimously Passes Armenian Genocide Law

MONTREAL (ANCC)–On November 28–Quebec’s National Assembly unanimously passed a law formally recognizing the 1915 Armenian Genocide. Bill 194 states that the National Assembly of Quebec enacts that the twenty-fourth of April is proclaimed Armenian Genocide Memorial Day. Bill 194 also recognizes that since 1980–the National Assembly has unanimously supported every motion to commemorate the Armenian Genocide; that–in recent years–a number of countries have in various ways acknowledged the existence of the Armenian Genocide; and–that Quebecers wish to share the painful memory their fellow citizens of Armenian origin have of the tragic events of 1915.

"This is a great victory for truth and justice. All Quebecers–not only Quebecers of Armenian origin–should be proud of its National Assembly members," stated Norair Serengulian–President of the ANCQ. "The National Assembly showed not only courage and leadership–but also affirmed its belief that truth and justice are virtues that transcend politics–both locally and internationally. Today–Armenian-Quebecers are especially proud of all the members of the National Assembly."
