UN Names Armenia’s Social Security Ministry Most ‘Transparent’

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The United Nation’s (UN) Armenia office singled out the Armenian Ministry for Social Security–headed by ARF member Aghvan Vartanian–as the body operating in the most transparent manner in Armenia. The announcement came during a ceremony on Wednesday–and was the result of a yearlong monitoring process carried out by the UN–along with non-governmental organizations that support information freedom.

Organized on the occasion of International Day of Human Rights–the event awarded those who struggle to establish the necessary atmosphere for the protection of human rights.

UN Development Program Resident Representative Lise Grande–in congratulating the recipients–stressed the importance of government support–awareness of the citizens of their own rights–and the activity of structures that guarantee the protection of human rights. Grande explained that fundamental human rights are not only pan-human in nature–but also inalienable. "These basic rights which are based on respect and honor are for everyone. . . Freedom of information is on of these rights."

Other award recipients included Armenian Parliament member Viktor Dallakian–for the best legislative initiative on human rights’ protection; the chairman of legal commission of the Armenian parliament Rafik Petrosian; chairman of commission on education–science–sport–and youth issues Hran’sh Hakobian; and Parliament member Shavarsh Kocharian.
