Quebec National Assembly Armenian Genocide Legislation Ready to Become Law

QUEBEC (ANCC)–On the invitation of Quebec’s Lt. Governor Lise Thibault–members of the Armenian National Committee of Quebec witnessed–on December 10–the Royal Assent for Bill 194–The Armenian Genocide Commemoration Bill. Royal Assent by the Lt. Governor is required for any legislation to become law.

During the solemn ceremony steeped in tradition–the Bill was read in French and in English prior to the Lt. Governor’s signing–which was witnessed by civil servants who worked on the Bill–the Lt. Governor’s staff–Quebec National Assembly Members (MNA’s) Yvan Bordeleau (PLQ–Acadie)–Daniel Turp (PQ–Mercier)–and Christos Sirros (PLQ–Laurier-Dorion). Representing the Armenian community were Dikran Arouchian–Chant Der Atamian–and Norair Serengulian.

After the Royal Assent was given–the MNAs expressed their profound satisfaction that the Bill had been passed unanimously. After a reading of William Saroyan’s famous poem by Turp–the Lt. Governor expressed her admiration of Armenia’s–noting particularly how family and family values are important to all Armenia’s. She then asked the representatives of the Armenian community to speak of their families’ plight during the Armenian Genocide.

In thanking the Quebec National Assembly–Serengulian expressed the sincere gratitude of not only Armenian-Quebecers–but Armenia’s worldwide–for the work done by the body and the Lt. Governor for the Royal Assent.
