Emil Kazaz Wins Italy Medici Award

LOS ANGELES–Renowned sculptor-painter Emil Kazaz of Los Angeles won one of the five gold medals for sculpture in the 4th International Biennale Exhibition which took place in Florence–Italy–December 6-15.

More than 890 artists from 72 countries participated in the prestigious exhibition of contemporary art.

The international jury of ten was a virtual who’s who in art: Don Ashton–author of editor of 30 books on art; Dr. Barbara Rose–author of 20 books on art; Kevin Power–internationally known author; Teresa Ortega Coca–Spain’s well-known art historian–and others. The international scientific committee of 37 was composed of curators–professors–and authors from more than 15 countries.

The categories were painting–sculpture–photography–drawing–and media.

Kazaz was represented by three bronze sculptures and two paintings. The 2001 "Table of San Pedro" sculpture (bronze 66x61x58 cm) won him the Lorenzo il Magnifico Medici Award.

The 50 year-old Kazaz–born in Gyumri–Armenia–has lived in Los Angeles since 1980–and has exhibited internationally. His mythologically grounded figures exude a sensual aura and a living character.

Art critic and professor Joe Lewis writes–"Kazaz’s characters are original–acutely observed–and marvelously refreshing-especially considering how well worn this territory is."

Mary C. Leto–an art critic in New York–writes "Emil Kazaz cannot be categorized unless magician is an acceptable form of representation. Kazaz has originated an art that allows us to outwardly dream. He has imbued the dream image with mass–form and power–forging lasting works of art."

On the occasion of the 4th International Biennale Exhibition in Florence–a beautiful 966-page book was published with all the names of the participants–a short biography–and their works.
