American Jewish Congress to Honor Prime Minister of Turkey

ARMENIANS AND GREEKS JOINTLY CONVEY DISAPPOINTMENT

WASHINGTON–DC–Greek Americans and Armenian Americans joined together today to communicate their disappointment regarding the decision by the American Jewish Congress to honor Recep Tayyip Erdogan–the Prime Minister of Turkey–a nation that continues to violate the most basic rights of its citizens and neighbors–reported the Armenian National Committee America (ANCA).

The American Jewish Congress–a leading human and civil rights organization–is set to honor the Turkish Prime Minister with its Bravery Award during a program at the HSBC Bank USA on January 26th in New York City.

The joint Greek/Armenian American letter–signed by American Hellenic Institute (AHI) founder Gene Rossides and Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) chairman Kenneth V. Hachikian–reviewed Turkey’s record of domestic abuses and aggression abroad under Erdogan’s leadership–noting that–"These are not the actions of a leader who deserves the praise of the American Jewish Congress–a proud organization that represents a community that Greek and Armenian Americans have–through long experience–come to know as the defender of the highest ethical principles." The full text of the AHI/ANCA letter is provided below.

Over a dozen Jewish American groups are among the coalition of more than one hundred organizations supporting the Genocide Resolution before Congress. This legislation reaffirms the values of the Genocide Convention and cites the Armenian Genocide–along with the Holocaust and the Rwandan and Cambodian genocides–as examples of past genocides. Among the supporters of this resolution are the NAACP–Union of Orthodox Rabbis–National Council of La Raza–American Values–International Campaign for Tibet–Rabbinical Assembly–Sons of Italy–and the National Council of Churches.
