Vartan Gregorian Presidential Medal of Freedom Recipient

President George W. Bush revealed today–the recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom–the Nation’s highest civil award. Scholar and historian Vartan Gregorian was named–along with His Holiness Pope John Paul II–journalist Robert L. Bartley–actress Doris Day–golf legend Arnold Palmer–and others honored for their distinguished service. Gregorian revitalized the New York Public Library during the 1980s. He has taught at six universities–and led Brown University as its president for nine years before moving to his current post as president of the Carnegie Corporation of New York. "We are greatly pleased to see Vartan Gregorian’s years of public service and tremendous contributions to the field of education recognized by President Bush with the Presidential Medal of Freedom," said ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian. "Armenian Americans join today with Armenia’s around the world in honoring Dr. Gregorian’s scholarship and many achievemen’s in world of learning–his truly tireless leadership in the civic life of the United States–and–of course–his abiding devotion to his Armenian heritage."
