New Award for Teaching about Armenian Genocide

SAN FRANCISCO–A new annual award–named the Aharonian Award–has been created by the Genocide Education Project to award secondary level educators who excel in the teaching of the Armenian genocide. The purpose of the award is to identify and provide recognition for an outstanding educator who has included lessons on the history of the Armenian genocide in his/her curriculum. The lesson plan must have been used in a classroom during the current year and will be selected by a panel of educators.

This is the first time that a national award has been offered to secondary level educators who teach about the Armenian genocide. "We know that teachers all over the country are teaching about the Armenian genocide in unique and interesting ways," stated Raffi Momjian–Executive Director of the Genocide Education Project. "With the establishment of the Aharonian Award–we now have a chance to reward the significant and important work of educators who teach this essential piece of history."

The deadline for the award is June 2–2006. Award eligibility requiremen’s and criteria to submit a lesson plan can be found at www.TeachGenocide.org and www.GenocideEducation.org. The recipient of the Aharonian Award will receive a cash award–resources on the Armenian genocide for personal use and for the affiliated institution’s library–and publication of the lesson plan on the www.TeachGenocide.org website.
