Political Coalition Issues Statement about Constitutional Referendum Results

YEREVAN (YERKIR)–Armenia’s ruling coalition–comprised of the Republican Party of Armenia–the Orinats Yerkir Party–and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation–issued a statement November 29 about Sunday’s constitutional referendum.

In the statement–the ruling coalition discusses what the referendum means for Armenia and maintains the validity of the vote–dismissing the opposition’s claims of falsified results.

"Our country and society entered in a completely new stage of development that gives us great opportunities to implement fundamental democratic reforms meeting European standards," says the letter about the new consitutional amendmen’s.

The letter upholds the results of the election saying: "Impartial and authorized structures–for instance the joint observers’ mission of the Council of Europe–have concluded that the conduct of the referendum in general met the international standards and that the violations do not affect the outcome."

Claiming that the opposition is merely trying to cause conflict–the letter called on the citizens of Armenia to "restrain from the efforts of breaching the country’s stability and international image."

The letter also promised investigations on behalf of the government into the alleged fraud.

"We believe that the mentioned fraud and setbacks should be probed duly–relevant conclusions should be made and those responsible should be punished."
