Tennis Star Nalbandian Wins Argentine Sports Award

Tennis star David Nalbandian–winner of the Munich Open and Shanghai Masters–was given the Argentine Sports Journalists’ Circle’s (CPDA) Sportsman of the Year award.

Cordoba-born Nalbandian beat out basketball player Emanual Ginobili by only three votes. Ginobili–who plays for the San Antonio Spurs–won a second National Basketball Association trophy this year and was much lauded by Argentina’s sports journalists.

Each year the CPDA gives out a Sportsman of the Year award–known as an "Olympic Gold," award to the best athletes in discipline. Nalbandian–who beat the world’s number one tennis player–Switzerland’s Roger Federer–also won the best tennis player award. He received his award at a ceremony on Monday night at the Vincent Lopez Convention Center–in Buenos Aires.

"The award really is a surprise–because I always say it’s very difficult to evaluate and compare some individual sports with some others which are collective," Nalbandian said.

"For next year–one of my objectives is winning the Davis Cup. I also want to win a Grand Slam."
