The Regional Executive of the Armenian Relief Society of the Western US (ARS-WR) Javakhk Fund Committee has organized a public forum to raise awareness about the history and the dire socio-economic situation of the Armenian community in Javakhk.
The presentation by John Kossakian–principal of Ferrahian High School–will be held on Sunday–February 26–at 6 PM–in the Glendale Central Library–222 E. Harvard St.–Glendale–CA 91206. The program features DVD and PowerPoint presentations about the difficult life Armenia’s in Javakhk lead.
"We hope the public will come to the forum and learn about the grave challenges the Armenia’s living in Javakhk are facing–along with the indifference of the Georgian authorities," said Haigoush Kohler–Javakhk Fund Committee Chair. She added–"Our humanitarian assistance–at this stage–is very important and urgently needed."
Javakhk is the region just north of Armenia in Georgia–with a predominantly Armenian population that is in desperate need for socio-cultural–economic–health–and educational services. Historically–Armenia’s have lived in the area since the 4th Century.
The ARS-WR Javakhk Fund Committee continues to assess the community’s conditions and provides assistance to meet those needs. Fundraising is an on-going process–which is supported by our community–young and old. To help with the fundraising–students helped prepare piggy-banks for the upcoming coin drive at participating Armenian schools–and Saturday and after school programs.
The committee has also planned a dinner reception aboard the "MV Majestic" ship–which will depart from the Long Beach harbor–on Sunday–March 12–2006–from 4 to 9 PM. The program features "Zulal," an Armenian a cappella folk trio from the East Coast.
