Chirac Stands By His Position on Genocide Recognition

PARIS (Arminfo)–Officials at Elysee Palace Tuesday confirmed that French President Jacques Chirac stood behind his stance of urging Turkey to recognize the Armenian Genocide, refuting Turkish press reports alleging that in a phone conversation over the weekend, Chirac apologized to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Arminfo news agency was told by the presidential press service that during the phone conversation with Erdogan, Chirac repeated the commen’s he made while visiting Armenian earlier this month, when he said that Turkey must recognize the Armenian Genocide, as a way to facilitate neighborly relations with Armenia. "In fact, there was a phone conversation, however, we do not confirm the information, presented in the Turkish Media. During the conversation with the Prime Minister Erdogan, the President Chirac repeated his statement in Yerevan, stressing the importance of recognizing the Armenian Genocide by Ankara, if Turkey wished to join the European Union," an official at the presidential press service said.
