Prime Minister Kicks Off Year of France Celebrations

PARIS (Armenpress)–"Where were we and where we are now?" With these words, world famous singer Charles Aznavour Thursday kicked off celebration marking the 15th anniversary of Armenia’s celebrations and the official inauguration of the Year of Armenia. Among the 2000 people gathered at Paris’s Garnier Opera House were members of the French National Assembly, Senate, Armenia’s Prime Minister Antranik Markarian, as well as public and cultural figures and representatives of the Armenian community. In his remarks Armenia’s ambassador to France Eduard Nalbandian ensured that the Year of Armenia in France will give the French community an opportunity to get acquainted with Armenian culture more closely and provide new impetus to Armenian-French relations. In his speech Markarian stressed the Republic of Armenia and it people have exerted great efforts for overcoming political, economic, social and other problems on their way. Markarian also referred to the support of its allies, and first of all France, in the recognition and condemnation of the Armenian genocide. The prime minister noted that Armenia is a stable developing country, a reliable partner in the international arena and is successfully deepening its involvement in international processes. He praised France’s continued support and its alliance since the first day of the establishment of the republic. France’s Minister of Culture Renaud Donnedieu de Vabresin underscored that the Year of Armenia in France has been heralded by the Armenian and French presidents. The minister thanked the organizers of the Year saying that it is a wonderful opportunity for the French people to get acquainted with Armenian culture more closely. The minister emphasized the exhibition of ancient Armenian man’scripts, katchkars and treasures of Holy Etchmiadzin, which will open soon at the Louvre.
