YEREVAN (Yerkir)– A library named after long-time Armenian Revolutionary Federation Bureau chairman Hrair Maroukhian was inaugurated Monday during a ceremony at the ARF Bureau’s headquarters in Yerevan. The ARF Bureau, representatives of ARF Central Committees of Armenia, Artsakh and other regions worldwide attended the ceremony, where Bureau chairman Hrant Markarian and Maroukhian’s widow, Anahit, and daughter Shaghig on hand. In his remarks, Bureau member Albert Ajemian said that Maroukhian was both a skillful political figure and an intellectual. "He was a great fan of books and a great reader," said Ajemian. He also announced that the Bureau had decided to bring the ARF archives to Armenia using state-of-the-art technology to catalogue and maintain them. He also added that the items kept in the ARF museum in Paris would also be brought to Armenia and become part of the Hrair Maroukhian library. The newly established library began to operate in March using books housed in Maroukhian’s vast private library, which was brought to Armenia from Athens after his death. Later, books were also brought from the ARF office in Lebanon, making the library complete. Currently, the library contains complete collections of many ARF publications, including rare copies of the Bureau’s official organ, Droshak, published between 1890 and 1904. The library currently has 5,000 books. In his remarks, ARF Bureau chairman Hrant Markarian said that the library would be very useful not only to ARF members but to the public at large, especially to students. Maroukhian’s daughter, Shaghig, also echoed Markarian’s sentimen’s, saying that the library would especially be useful to students who are studying political and social sciences. "As for the emotional value of the library, I have to say that the party was the first family for my father, and it is only natural that all of his books have been returned to the party," Shaghig Maroukhian said. The ribbon cutting ceremony was done by Anahit Maroukhian and Hrant Markarian.
