SANTIAGO, Chile–The Armenian Revolutionary Federation, represented by its Bureau member Mario Nalbandian, took part in the Socialist International’s Conference from Nov. 6 to 7. The worldwide political organization brings together more than 160 social democratic, socialist and labor parties from all continents. Nalbandian met with more than 100 representatives from various countries around the world and briefed them about the current situation in Armenia, activities of the ARF, as well as the recent developmen’s in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process The ARF is the only organization across the Commonwealth of Independent States that is a full-fledged member of Socialist International. Chile, which has the first woman as President of the Republic, Michelle Bachelet, a leader and symbol of this political family, has a long history of relations with the Socialist International, particularly in the efforts to restore democracy in the country and in defense of human rights. The experience of the governmen’s of the Concertacin in Chile, the alliance which brought Michelle Bachelet to power, is of great interest in the current political scenario in Latin America, as an example of economic growth with solidarity and social protection. Under the theme "From National to Global Governance: Priorities for a Sustainable Future", the Council was opened by the President of the Republic, in Santiago, on Monday 6 November. Other speakers at the opening were the President of Costa Rica, Oscar Arias, and the leader of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, Pasok, of Greece, and President of the Socialist International, George Papandreou. Environmental concerns and challenges in developing policies for the sustainable use of energy on a global scale were addressed in a session in the afternoon of Monday 6, with the theme "Energy and Climate Change: A Call to Action"; another discussion focused on "New Horizons for Peace: Promoting Solutions to Conflicts" in which peace in the Middle East, Africa and latest developmen’s in East Asia were addressed in the morning on Tuesday 7. The SI Council counted with the participation of political leaders, ministers and members of parliament from close to hundred member parties of the International, as well as the participation of delegates from some ten international organizations.
