Tashjian’s Legacy

To the editor: Tom Vartabedian’s tribute to James Tashjian was touching (Asbarez. Jan. 6). I never met James Tashjian, but I felt I knew him. Sometime in the 1930’s, I walked into my father’s office and he handed me a newspaper and said, "Here is an English language Armenian newspaper that you can read." It was the first issue of the Hairenik Weekly. I became a subscriber to the Hairenik Weekly-Armenian Weekly and later to the Armenian Review–both of them from day one. Through many years, James Tashjian was a major source for news on Armenian affairs. His success and dedication to his craft were clear. Let us hope that his successors have a similar legacy.
