Socialist International Women’s Meeting in Yerevan

YEREVAN (YERKIR MEDIA) Socialist International (SI) Women held its regional meeting in Yerevan, Armenia over the weekend, at the invitation of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation’s (ARF) Women’s Committee. Titled "Gender Dimensions of International Migration," the meeting reviewed the gender factor influencing global matters such as state social and political policies. The ARF Women’s Committee was organized four years ago in order to expand the role of women in Armenia’s public and political life. Since its formation, field visits to the various regions of the country have been organized, along with regional training programs in order to advance the work of the unique committee. "Yerkir Media" reported that while SI Women viewed many positive developmen’s in Armenia as far as women are concerned, the current environment is nevertheless not exactly encouraging. "We see that women are not welcomed in decision making bodies. For example, we cannot imagine that overcoming poverty will be a reality if women are not involved in all activities and policy, be they social, economic, or political," said ARF Women’s Committee Chair Maria Titizian. Discussions at the meeting focused on how to fully utilize women’s resources, concluding that mindsets must change in a country that views the primary role of women as the family nurturer, but not, for example, as one being involved in the country’s political climate. To back this, they pointed to the mere 7 representatives of the 131 in the country’s parliament, and only one executive post held by a woman in the cabinet.
