Republican Party Nominates Sarkisian for Prime Minister

YEREVAN (Combined Sources)–Armenia’s leading Republican Party Monday nominated its acting head, Defense Minister Serzh Sarkisian, for the post of prime minister, paving the way for his official appointment. President Robert Kocharian is now expected to sign a decree endorsing Sarkisian’s candidacy. Republican Party vice president and speaker of the Armenian Parliament Tigran Torossian said Sarkisians sole candidacy was the right move, saying that his party has several minister in the government, but Sarkisian was the best choice for the position. Torosian added that all government coalition forces had indicated that they would support the Republican Partys decision. Previous Prime Minister Andranik Markarian, who led the Republican Party, died of a heart attack on March 25. According to Artem Petrosian, the head of Yerevan’s municipal ambulance service, the 55-year-old chairman of the governing Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) was unconscious and his heart had stopped beating when ambulance crews arrived at his apartment in the early afternoon.
