Azeri, Armenian Youth Clash at Moscow May Day Event

MOSCOW (Combined Sources)Armenian and Azeri youth clashed Tuesday during a May Day celebration at the Russian University of Friendship resulting from Azeris anger over Armenia’s waving the flag of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. Azeri youth complained to security agencies and the university administration, and claimed that Armenia’s did not heed their call about the illegitimate actions they were taking. As the Azeri trend news agency reported, the Armenia’s then faced the decisive protest from Azeris in the form of scuffle. One of the Azeris who took part in the scuffle tore up the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic flag. Moscow Police and special OMON forces were called to the scene and fired shots into the air. Trend reported that a 22-year-old Azeri youth was wounded and taken to the hospital. In Baku, Azeri Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov presented a protest note to the Russian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Vasili Istratov, the ministrys spokesman Khazar Ibrahim told the APA. The note protested that Nagorno Karabakh was described as an independent state in the Russian Encyclopedia. It said that misrepresentation of facts offended Azeris people, contradicts Azerbaijan-Russia relations, had a negative influence on Russia’s image in Azerbaijan, Russia’s role in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict resolution as a mediating country, as well as public opinion both in Russia and Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan demanded that Russia amend the encyclopedia published in 2006 and destroy and confiscate editions of the reference in circulation. Azerbaijan claimed that it had not yet received an official reply to its protest note to the Russian television RTR, which called Nakhchivan as an historical Armenian territory.
