YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The United States is extremely worried about the expansion of Armenia-Iran relations. US Charge d’Affaires Anthony Godfrey said Friday during a press conference at the US Embassy.
He added that the US had expressed its concern on different levels to the Armenian government.
“Two UN Security Council resolutions already directly refer to the relations with Iran and financial investmen’s. We are working with the international community to have Iran fulfill its international commitmen’s. We strongly recommend the Armenian Government to be our partner in bringing Iran close to the fulfillment of its international commitmen’s,” US Charge d’Affaires said.
Simultaneously, Godfrey noted that “they assess that the Armenian Government is executing its economic cooperation rather transparently. “We also appreciate that we are frankly told how they are going to develop these relations in the future,” he said.
As for the suggestion of Russia to jointly exploit the Gabala radio-location station, Anthony Godfrey considered it is too early to say anything. “I think speaking about it is premature and I cannot say whether the radar will once become part of the network or not,” he mentioned.
Also during the press conference, an overview was provided on $1.6 billion in assistance that the U.S. government has provided to Armenia’since it gained independence. The event was designed to follow through on President Bush’s May 30 speech in which he described the U.S. agenda to “help developing nations build a better future for their people.” The Directors of ten different Embassy offices were present to take reporters’ questions on the assistance that their agencies are providing to Armenia.
At the same time, the Embassy’s Assistance Map webpage was publicly launched. The Assistance Map is an interactive tool that allows the public to click on a location anywhere on a map of Armenia. By doing so, a person will find a list of U.S. government agencies that are providing assistance in that area. Another click on one of the specific agencies will provide the details of those projects and other parts of Armenia that benefited from the same project.
Together with the launch of the Assistance Map, the Embassy introduced its new, online Assistance Newsletter which will come out twice a year. The Newsletter will provide details and updates of assistance projects currently underway in Armenia.
Both the Assistance Map and the Assistance Newsletter can be found by going to the Embassy’s website at www.usa.am and clicking on “Assistance Programs.” The information is available in English and Armenian.-0-/45/
