Karabakh Foreign Minister Blasts Council of Europe Statement

STEPANAKERT (Combined Sources)–Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Foreign Minister Georgi Petrosian Thursday responded to a recent statement by the Council of Europe leadership, which said that the upcoming presidential polls in Karabakh would destabilize the conflict resolution process.
Serbian Foreign Minister and President of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers, Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic said in a statement that the upcoming elections in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic would not promote the conflict resolution process and would impede the ongoing negotiations.
Foreign Minister Petrosian expressed regret over the statement, saying: “It is unfortunate that representatives of the Council of Europe, the organization mandated to protect and propagate the ideals and principles of pluralistic democracy, human rights and rule of law by means of integration processes, disapprove of the elections. This casts doubt on the institution of elections as an important element of democracy, which contradicts the C of Europe Charter.”
“If European officials do not want to contribute to the democratic processes in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic then we have the right to expect that they, at least, will not impede the strengthening of democratic institutes in our republic,” said Petrosian.
“We are deeply convinced that the democratization is an important precondition for the Karabakh conflict resolution, since the democracy presupposes the creation of mechanisms that allow solving any conflict exclusively in a peaceful way. The Nagorno Karabakh Republic is striving for this principle. It would be helpful if the representatives of various European structures shared this aspiration,” said the foreign minister.
