YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenian Ambassador to US, Tatoul Margarian, met Tuesday with Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon England, Armenian foreign ministry told Armenpress.
The foreign ministry said the two men discussed a wide scope of issues pertaining to American-Armenian military cooperation and regional security issues.
Ambassador Margarian presented a letter of gratitude from Armenia’s defense ministry to England for treating Armenian officer Gevork Nalbandian from the Armenian non-combat platoon in Iraq at the Washington-based Walter Reed military hospital.
England thanked Armenia for having a non-combatant platoon in Iraq as part of the coalition troops.
Captain Gevork Nalbandian was wounded while on duty in Iraq in November 2006. He returned to Armenia after recuperating at the Walter Reed Medical Hospital.
Nalbandian was wounded while on a mission to defuse mines. He lost his leg in a roadside bomb explosion in which one Polish and one Slovak soldier were killed in south-central Iraq. He was first transported to an American military hospital in Germany for treatment and then to the US.
In Yerevan, an inter-agency commission established to coordinate the expansion of Armenia’s military doctrine convened Wednesday for its third meeting.
A spokesman for the defense ministry said the meeting was chaired by commission chairman Seyran Ohanian, who is chief of the Armed Forces general staff.
The spokesman’said the commission discussed what has been done so far toward expanding the doctrine. He said the commission discussed and reconciled a series of proposals and suggestions.
