Homenetmen Team Departs for Pan-Armenian Games

YEREVAN (Combined Sources)–More than 80 athletes, coaches and leaders of the Homenetmen Glendale Ararat chapter left for Armenia this week to take part in the fourth Pan-Armenian Games, which will kick off in Yerevan on Sunday.
The Homenetmen Ararat members are participating in men’s basketball (returning champions), women’s basketball, soccer, men’s volleyball, women’s volleyball and few individual participants in table tennis, tennis and track & field.
Glendale’s achievemen’s in previous games include the championship in men’s basketball and a second place in women’s basketball.
A committee of few coaches led by Armik Ebrahimian have been organizing this trip since February. The first tryouts were held to select the best Ararat athletes in each sport.
Many months of hard work has been put together to coordinate and organize the different aspects of this trip, including fund raising, selection of uniforms, practices, accounting, extra activities in Yerevan.
The fourth Pan Armenian Games will kick off August 18 at the Republic Square. The games will run until August 26 with the closing ceremonies to be held at the Opera House the same day.
The state has released 80 million drams for the organization of the games. More than 2000 athletes from 68 cities will be competing in 10 different sports.
The Pan Armenian Games will run under the symbolic image of a bear with a scarf in colors of the Armenian national flag and a hat on. Armenia has been organizing Pan Armenian Games since August 28, 1999.
Armenia’s Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian Thursday welcomed the Pan-Armenian Games and emphasized the important role the Diaspora plays in the strengthening of Armenia.
