ANC-PAC Hosts Event for Newest Member of Congress

LOS ANGELES–Supporters of the Armenian National Committee – Political Action Committee (ANC-PAC) gathered at the home of longtime supporters Dr. and Mrs. Sarkis Arevian on August 19 to support the campaign of congressional candidate Laura Richardson. Richardson, who served in the California State Assembly for the past year, was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives just days later, on August 22nd, in a special election held in California’s 37th Congressional District. The 37th District, which includes much of Long Beach and Compton, was represented by the late Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald, who passed away this April.
"Armenian American voters in the Long Beach area came out in strong support of Laura Richardson because she shares their values," commented ANC-PAC spokesman Ara Papazian. "Laura understands our community’s dedication to human rights and the need for our federal legislators to stop the genocide in Darfur and the continued denial of the Armenian Genocide," Papazian added.
The ANC-PAC event held in support of Laura Richardson’s congressional campaign was generously hosted by Dr. Sarkis Arevian and his wife Tammy. Dr. Arevian has been a longtime ANC-PAC supporter and is widely known in the Armenian American community for his leadership in the Armenian General Athletic Union, popularly known as Homenetmen.
In a letter issued by Richardson’s campaign last month she remarked: "If elected to Congress, I will be proud to add my name to the long and distinguished list of H. Res. 106 [Armenian Genocide Resolution] cosponsors. We need to formally recognize this unfortunate chapter of history, so as to prevent any future genocides and promote regional stability."
The ANC-PAC is a non-partisan federally registered political action committee established to support campaign committees for Members of Congress who share the values of the Armenian American community. The ANC-PAC is at the forefront of efforts to ensure that the voice of the Armenian American community is clearly heard in our nation’s capital. The ANC-PAC continues a century old tradition of Armenian Americans engagement on the public policy issues facing national political leaders, both in the U.S. Congress and the White House.
