Artist Marco Grigorian Dies at 83

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The renowned painter Marco Grigorian died Tuesday of a heart attack in his house in Yerevan. He was 83.
Armenia’s Cultural Ministry has appointed a special committee to oversee his national funeral, which will take place Saturday.
Grigorian founded the Middle East Museum in Armenia and was granted honorary citizenship of Yerevan, after moving to Armenia and establishing the museum, which houses his work and collection.
Grigorian who was a pioneer of Iran’s Avant-Guard art. He was better known for his coffee house paintings, a form of religious and art. His paintings decorate many of Iran’s traditional coffee-houses.
Grigorian’s artwork have been exhibited in various art museums and personal collections around the world.
Grigorian was born in 1923 in Kropotkin, Russia. In 1930 Family moved to Tabriz, Iran.Persia.
In 1943, during World War II, Marco worked for American military transport school, first student, later as instructor-interpreter. M.T. S., a military camp sending food and ammunition by convoy of trucks to Russia via Tabriz.
In 1948, he was drafted to the Iranian military and during that time began painting at the Kamal-el-molk Art School in Teheran, organizing several group exhibits. In 1950, he moved to Rome where her enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1954.
In 1962 he moved to New York, where he began his new life as an artist and was featured in several exhibits and galleries. In 1980 he opened his own gallery in New York named after Arshile Gorky.
After the death of his only daughter, Sabrina, in 1986, Grigorian devoted his life to the homeland.
He moved his entire collection to Armenia in 1992 and in 1993 opened the Middle East Museum in Yerevan,
His last exhibition was held in the National Gallery of Armenia in 2004.
