New Head of OSCE Yerevan Speaks Against Monopolies in Armenia

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Chairman of the state commission for protection of economic competition, Ashot Shahnazarian, met with the newly appointed head of the OSCE Yerevan Office, Sergey Kapinos Tuesday to discuss cooperation issues.
A press release disseminated to the media by the commission, quoted Ashot Shahnazarian as saying that the cooperation between the commission and the OSCE Office will become more effective because the new ambassador is well aware of all aspects of the Armenian economy.
"There is actually nothing in the Armenian economy that I have no knowledge of,’ Sergey Kapinos was quoted as saying.
Shahnazarian emphasized the OSCE’s help in developing the institutional capacities of the commission as well as the mechanisms for the effective application of legislation to the economy.
"As an economist I can say that monopolies are a big hindrance to economic progress. Development of market relations is very important from the perspective of economic stability, which will simultaneously promote a strengthening of the middle class," Kapinos was quoted as saying. "It would be great if we could set such competition mechanisms that would promote development of a market mechanism in Armenia."
