Armenian Americans to Host Fundraiser for California Legislator Anthony Portantino

LOS ANGELES–Friends and supporters of California State Assemblymember Anthony Portantino (D-44) will gather on December 16, 2007 to raise funds for his reelection campaign.Portantino, a longtime supporter of the Armenian National Committee, has been an active and effective advocate on behalf of his Armenian American constituents.The event is being hosted by ANC supporters from both La Crescenta and Pasadena.
The fundraiser for Portantino will be held at the La Crescenta Armenian Center, which is located at 2633 Honolulu Avenue, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.Individuals who would like to attend this event in support Assemblymember Portantino’s reelection campaign are encouraged to RSVP by calling (818) 807-6091.
"Anthony Portantino is a good friend and ally for our community," remarked Pasadena ANC leader Dikran Tabakian.His colleague in La Crescenta, ANC leader Arick Gevorkian shared this same sentiment. "Anthony is a grassroots leader," Gevorkian commented."Just like the ANC, he understands that to be effective and efficient, you need to be in touch with people.I encourage all Armenian Americans in the Los Angeles area to come to this event in support of our great friend Assemblymember Portantino," he added.
In remarks prepared for a press conference to stop the global cycle of genocide held by the Armenian Youth Federation earlier this year, Portantino commented, "It is important that we not only condemn the genocides of the twenty first century, but also to support the recognition of the first genocide on the twentieth century. I applaud the members of the Armenian Youth Federation for focusing attention on these important issues."
Assemblymember Portantino was elected to serve the 44th Assembly District in November of 2006.His District includes Altadena, Duarte, La Canada Flintridge, Pasadena, South Pasadena and Temple City.The 44th District also includes parts Arcadia, Monrovia, Mayflower Village and the Northeast Los Angeles neighborhoods of Glassell Park, Hermon, Highland Park, Mount Washington and Eagle Rock.
Assemblymember Portantino served seven and a half years on the La Canada Flintridge City Council and two terms as Mayor.He has served as President of the League of California Cities Mayor’s and Councilmember’s Department and the Executive Board of the California Contract Cities Association. He is also a past member of the Pasadena City College Bond Oversight Committee.
