Microsoft to Cooperate with Armenian for IT Development in Schools

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A document outlining a 3-5 year plan for the development of information technology solutions for Armenia’s education system will be signed early next year between Armenia’s Ministry of Education and Science and the Armenia branch of Microsoft, reported the head of Microsoft Armenia Grigor Barseghian.
Microsoft plans to provide amnesty for Armenian schools for having used non-licensed software in approximately 10 thousand computers. The Ministry of Education and Science will also be offered the opportunity to install new versions of licensed software packages on the computers in the schools at an incredibly discounted rate.
Reports indicate that the same condition will apply for computers used within the ministry as well as local education departmen’s.
Barseghian also noted that an internal information circulation system for the government will be developed at the Microsoft Innovation Center, which is to open in Yerevan this month.
A pilot program, aimed at gauging the prospects of IT in Armenian schools, is also being implemented in the region of Syunik, he said. By collaborating with the a number of private compaies, NGO’s, and the Ministry of Trade and Economic Development and the Ministry of Education and Science, Microsoft will create the infrastructure for online courses and examinations to be implemented in Armenian schools. This is critical for remote villages where there is a lack of teachers and in school curricula is limited, according to Barseghian. These villages need such technologies.
The technology solutions to be implemented by Microsoft will be localized for the Armenian language at the Innovation Center in Yerevan.
