AKHALKALAK, GEORGIA (Armenpress)-The Head of Political Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Georgia Joy Davis-Kirschner and two other embassy officials Tuesday met with representatives of local Armenian organizations and journalists from Georgia’s mostly Armenian populated region of Javakhk, reports A-Info.
The main subject discussed at the meeting, which took place at the Armenian Youth Center in Akhalkalak, was the forthcoming presidential election in Georgia, scheduled for January 5, the news agency said.
"All mechanisms are being employed to ensure Georgian citizens that the election will be fair and just," said Davis Kirschner. "Georgia has made a big step towards NATO and to reaffirm its drive towards Europe it must demonstrate its ability to conduct a clean vote on January."
She said that 14 long-term international observers had already been deployed in the region, with more expected to arrive on January 2.
Earlier, representatives of Armenian non-governmental organizations of the region had handed to the US diplomat a memorandum reiterating Georgia’s commitmen’s towards the Council of Europe.
The news agency said the U.S. diplomat had promised to come to the region and discuss the problems raised in the memorandum, but despite this pledge the meeting only focused on the presidential election.
When asked why she ignored other issues, Davis-Kirschner said she would discuss them during another visit to the region.
