GLENDALE–Around 130 Armenian Students from local private and public schools visited Glendale Library on Dec. 1 to attend the Third Annual AESA Science Olympiad Coaching Day Workshop.
The workshop was held to foster interest in the areas of science and engineering and to encourage participation in the AESA Science Olympiad which will take place at California State University Northridge (CSUN) on March 30, 2008.
The students from the 6th through 12th grade arrived at 1:00 pm for an activity packed afternoon which included various science demonstrations. Students assisted with many fun experimen’s including how to extract DNA from strawberries, electromagnetic launcher, electromechanical energy demonstrator, gyroscope wheel, piggy magic optical illusion demo, radiometer mill, see-through car engine, iridescent polarizing plates, and custom wooden shuttle.
In addition students in grade 6th through 8th with limited or no knowledge of science fair participated in the hands on workshop that was designed to demonstrate how to start and finish a science project. Students were grouped in nine teams and each team constructed three or more paper rockets powered by the pressure generated from effervescing household chemicals reacting with water. Three students were awarded for building the most stable rocket that flew the highest distance and seven students were awarded for presenting the best project display board.
Students from 9th through 12th grade took advantage of the numerous scientists and engineers who were available as mentors to meet and assist students who needed help and advice with their school science projects.
Speakers for the afternoon included Dr. Shant Kenderian, AESA President, Dr. Marina Guevrekian, Chairwoman SO Committee, Helen Dabaghian SO Committee member, First place award winner of County Science Fair, Garen Arabian, a student from Chamlian School who explained his project and then answered questions raised by Sarkis Barkhoudarian, SO Committee member. Garen Arabian also mentioned that participating at the AESA Science Olympiad helped him to anticipate and be prepared for questions that arose from the judges at the County Science Fair.
Each of the speakers encouraged the students to register for the March 30th AESA’s Science Olympiad. For different project ideas students were directed to explore links to useful websites by visiting AESA.org website. The benefits for participation not only will include sense of pride and achievement but also monetary prizes for the winners in addition to the custom made Obsidian medallions from Armenia.
Before they left to explore their ideas for their projects, the students were given a handout of written information to assist them with their projects.
Students and teachers from the following schools attended the workshop: AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian, Armenian Sisters Academy, Arshag Dikranian, Chamlian, Crescenta Valley High School, Hovsepian, Merdinian and Ridgecrest Intermediate school.
