Top EU Diplomat Says South Caucasus Stability Important to Europe

BAKU (Armenpress)-The South Caucasus are a major intersection in the world and it is important for the European Union that the region continues along the path of stability and reform, said the EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana during an interview with Azerbaijani Trend News Agency
"It is therefore important for the European Union that the region continues on the path of reforms, consolidating stability and democracy and enhancing the conditions for prosperity and sustainable development," Solana said.
"We shall continue to support these efforts, particularly in the context of the implementation of the Action Plan of the European Neighborhood Policy which remains the basis of our cooperation," Solana said.
"This is an election year in the region. Presidential elections were held in Georgia on January 5 and the big challenge now is the spring Parliamentary elections. Armenia and Azerbaijan are also scheduled to hold presidential elections this year, with Armenia’s only weeks away," he remarked. "The European Union will continue to assist the countries in the region to ensure that the elections are free and fair. "
"We will also continue supporting international efforts to solve the unsettled conflicts in the region, including in Nagorno-Karabakh," Solana said. "We are also ready to support confidence building measures, as we are already doing in Georgia and we encourage the countries in the region to find constructive ways to improve their relations."
