YEREVAN (Armenpress)-Armenian Defense Minister Mikael Harutunian Thursday met with NATO delegates to discuss Armenia-NATO cooperation, and assess the implementation of Armenia’s Individual Partnership Action Plan and the Planning and Review Process, two key NATO initiatives in Armenia.
The delegation, which is led by the Head of the Political Affairs and Security Directorate Jaroslav Skonecka, arrived in Armenia Monday for official talks that are to last until Friday. Throughout the week, the NATO delegation has been meeting with its Armenian counterpart to discuss NATO’s growing interests in region security, the modernization of Armenia’s Armed forces as well as political and democratic reforms.
"The regular visits of different NATO representatives to Armenia and other regional countries indicate NATO’s growing interest in regional developmen’s," the Defense Minister said. "NATO’s role in the region is substantial, and the development of multifaceted cooperation with the Alliance is of primary importance for Armenia."
"The first two-year stage of the Planning and Review Process can be considered accomplished and its results will be discussed during the next NATO meeting in April Harutunian stated," Harutunian stated. "A new process–the Strategic Defense Review–will be launched this year."
According to Harutunian, NATO has an important role in ensuring international security and stability. This fact, he noted, is apparent with the peacekeeping missions in Kosovo and Afghanistan. Armenia highly appreciates the efforts of the organization in the development of Armenia-NATO cooperation.
Armenia is resolute in developing cooperation with NATO, according to Harutunian, who expressed hope that the collaboration will continue to grow and take on new dimensions in the coming years.
