Kocharian Says Will Ease Press Restrictions, Lifts Bans

YEREVAN (Combined Sources)-Armenian President Robert Kocharian on Monday lifted some of the restrictions of the state of emergency imposed in Yerevan last week, Presidential Spokesman Viktor Soghomonian told a press conference.
The president removed a ban on the work of political parties and other public organizations and deprived the authorities of the power to extradite people who violated the state of emergency. A ban on mass gatherings and controls on the media remain in place.
The government had declared a 20-day state of emergency on March 1 after clashes between protesters and police left eight people dead and dozens injured.
"There were no violations of the state of emergency regime in Yerevan since March 1, Soghomonian said."The domestic political situation is being stabilized."
The objective is to ensure a quick return to normal life, for the country and its population, Soghomonian said as he explained the reasoning behind Kocharian’s decision to lighten the restrictions ahead of the 20-day deadline.
