Third Memoir in Genocide Library, ‘Death March,’ to Be Presented in The Valley

LOS ANGELES–Death March, an eyewitness account of the Armenian Genocide published in English by Hagop and Knar Manjikian, will be presented at the KEA Center in Reseda on Sunday, April 6, at 3 p.m. Dr. Vahram Shemmassian, director of the Armenian Studies program at CSUN, will introduce the book, and Hovsep Injejikian, principal of the Merdinian School, will serve as master of ceremonies.
Death March is the memoir of Shahen Derderian, who was 8 years old in 1915, when the Ottoman Turkish government deported his family from their home in Sebastia (Sivas). Derderian’s descriptions of the deportation and massacre are vivid and heart-wrenching. He relates how he and other children who were thirsty during the “death marches” ran to the Euphrates River and turned away screaming because the water was full of corpses. His uncle was imprisoned with hordes of other men, and Derderian witnessed how his uncle was tortured before his death.
Derderian’s memoirs were first published in Armenian in the Hairenik monthly starting in 1950. They were translated to English by Ishkhan Jinbashian for Manjikian Publications.
The presentation of Death March is Sunday, April 6, at 3 p.m. at the Kessab Cultural Center, 18407 Sherman Way, Reseda, California. Also speaking at the event will be Anahid Meymarian, an author and educator, who will present Badmootyan Hamar and Doner, two books containing collections of articles and writings by Knar Manjikian.
Death March is the third Armenian memoir to be translated to English and published by the Manjikians. The first book, Passage through Hell, was published in 2005, and The Fatal Night was published in 2007.
Copies of Death March will be available for sale at the presentation for $15. To order the book, e-mail manjikianpub@hotmail.com.
