Kosovo a Precedent, says ARF Rep.

Arthur Aghabekian

PRISTINA (Aravod)–Whether or not it is acknowledged or even desired, Kosovo has set a precedent for the successful exercise of a peoples’ right to self-determination, said Chairman of the Armenian National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Defense, National Security and Interior Affairs Arthur Aghabekian during his working visit to Kosovo this week.
Aghabekian, who is also a member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federaion parliamentary faction, was in Kosovo to congratulate the Kosovar Republic on its newly won and internationally recognized independence. While there, he met with the Kosovar President, Prime Minister, and other high-ranking officials to discuss a number of international and domestic issues.
The Armenian parliamentarian drew a direct parallel between the main issues at the heart of Kosovar and Karabakh independence. Aghabekian explained that during the initial phases of Kosovar independence many claimed that Kosovo could not become a precedent for other situations. But the principle of self-determination was exercised and because of that a precedent was established, he said, referring to the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic’s drive to gain international recognition.
