YEREVAN (ArmRadio)–Head of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation’s parliamentary faction Hrair Karapetian is expected to run for the position of Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly during elections scheduled for the next four-day meeting of parliament.
Armenia’s parliament has one speaker and two deputy speakers. The second deputy speaker has been vacant since Vahan Hovannesian resigned from the post on February 22. Hovannesian, who ran for president in the February 19 election on the ARF ticket, resigned in protest of what he characterized as an election atmosphere marred by hatred, terror and threats, which left its mark on the day of the election.
Karapetian, who is running unopposed for the position, is expected to become the new Deputy Speaker. Hovannesian will replace him as the head of the ARF Parliamentary Faction.
