Vartan Oskanian Named Professional of The Year As The Armenian Professional Society Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary

LOS ANGELES, CA–Vartan Oskanian, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, will join a distinguished list of architects, business and civic leaders, educators, engineers, historians, industrialists, legal scholars, judges and medical practitioners, as he is honored as the Armenian Professional Society’s 50th Anniversary Professional of the Year at a Gala event on October 25, 2008 at the Sheraton Universal Hotel, Universal City, California.
Oskanian was the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia from 1998-2008 and the Lead Negotiator for Armenia in The Nagorno Karabakh Peace Process from 1993-2008. He also served as the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1997-1998. He has also been a Visiting Assistant Professor at the American University of Armenia.
Prior to his service to Armenia, Minister Oskanian was the Founder and Editor of the glossy and savvy Armenian International Magazine (AIM) in Los Angeles, California. A Structural Engineer by profession, he received his education at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy with an MA in Law and Diplomacy, at Harvard University with an MA in Government Studies, at Tufts University with an MS in Structural Engineering and at Yerevan Polytechnic Institute with a BS in Structural Engineering. He attended the Armenian General Benevolent Union High School in Aleppo, Syria. Minister Oskanian has demonstrated his strong civic leadership while serving on many boards and commissions. A publication of his speeches as Armenia’s Foreign Minister, “Speaking to Be Heard” will be released in September 2008.
The Armenian Professional Society was first launched on April 6, 1958 by a group of illustrious and service-oriented professionals with foresight to promote the arts, sciences and other academic areas. The organization was and still is non-sectarian, non-partisan and non-political. The charter group consisted of Virgil P. Arklin, MD, Leo Garapedian, MS, Vaughn Gregor, MS, Artin Inglizian, MD, Samuel Jerian, OD, Haig Kehiayan, LLD, Vahe Keshishian, MS and Vincent Yardum, Jr, AB. Their purpose was to foster fellowship among Armenian professionals and to share cultural, educational and social interests. Over the last 50 years, the Armenian Professional Society has evolved into an organization that acknowledges the achievemen’s of outstanding individuals, encourages students who have attained university education to proceed to post-graduate studies, and has awarded scholarships and gran’s to the American University of Armenia, Artsakh State University, State Engineering University of Armenia, the Fiber Optics Laboratory of the State Engineering University of Armenia, Yerevan State University, Yerevan State University of Architecture and Construction and to graduate students in the United States.
