Armenian Defense Chief, US Envoy Discuss Military Relations

YEREVAN (Armenpress)-Armenia’s Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian met with the US Envoy in Armenia Joseph Penington Tuesday to discuss the country’s continued military cooperation with the US and NATO as well as the role of Armenian-American military cooperation in the maintenance of regional security.
The Defense Minister told the US Charge d’Affaires that Armenia considers its peacekeeping mission in Kosovo to be a priority. Armenia’s involvement in international peacekeeping missions has both a military-political and strategic importance.
He stressed the experience and skills gained by Armenia’s Armed Forces as they serve within international divisions abroad.
Pennington welcomed the doubling of Armenia’s peacekeepers in Kosovo, and echoed Ohanian’s notion that such a move will further promote Armenia’s involvement in international processes and increase of Armenia’s international image.
With Armenia’set to host a series of NATO war games in October, Pennington noted that he expects bilateral relations between the two countries to expand during Ohanian’s tenure in office. Noting that Armenian-American military cooperation has an important role to play in the region, they both agreed that all efforts must be directed toward the peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict.
