MOSCOW (ArmRadio)–A spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry Thursday said his country would continue to support a mutually beneficial solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict that would benefit both Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Russia is ready to render its assistance and will serve as the guarantor of the settlement, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Andrei Nesterenko told reporters.
His remarks came as Armenia’s Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian arrived in Moscow Thursday for a three day working visit to improve, what Nesterenko described as, the coordination of Armenian and Russian Foreign Policy.
According to Nesterenko, Nalbandian’s visit is taking place during a critical period for both countries. He explaining that the presidential elections in Armenia and Russia reconfirmed both countries’ commitment to ensure continued development in bilateral relations.
He explained that Nalbandian is in Russia to discuss Russian and Armenian positions on a number of key international issues.
The two countries share similar attitudes on many of these issues, he noted, adding that it is necessary that both sides meet to work out steps for improving the coordination of their foreign policy actions.
Nalbandian is also scheduled to meet with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov for discussions on the current pace of Karabakh peace discussions. The two men will also discuss the future of Armenian-Russian cooperation in the security and stability of the South Caucasus.
Armenia’s Foreign Minister will also meet with the chairman of Russia’s Parliamentary Committee on CIS affairs Alexei Ostrovsky, and CSTO General Secretary Nikolai Bordyuzha.
Nesterenko said that the two countries will continue to work jointly within a number of international bodies and security alliances such as the UN, CSTO, Council of Europe and the OSCE.
According to him. Moscow regards the development of bilateral relations with its junior partner as an important factor for improving the situation in the region and resolving the lingering conflicts there.
Nesterenko told reporters that Russian investment in Armenia’s economy is expected to exceed $1 billion this year.
